Interlace: A journal of mathematics and fiber arts (Interlace) is a peer-reviewed open-access journal that publishes high-quality original work at the intersection of mathematics and fiber arts. The focus is on novel investigations and analyses of the mathematics within and inspired by fiber arts. This includes mathematical modeling of particular fiber artifacts or aspects of a fiber art, using mathematics to solve a problem presented in working on a fiber arts project, describing the process of accurately crafting a mathematical object, detailed descriptions of the mathematics within completed fiber arts pieces that illustrate mathematics, and the incorporation of mathematics in fiber arts project design. Interlace also welcomes pieces describing the design of a fiber arts project that displays a mathematical concept, introduction of new fiber arts techniques needed to explore advanced mathematics, and proofs that specific fiber arts can (or cannot) be used to instantiate a mathematical concept. Submissions can range from full theoretical articles to short pieces and even ephemera. There is neither a page limit nor a required page floor. There are no publication charges, but if permissions are needed for images included in papers, authors are responsible for obtaining them (and paying for them if required).
The scope of "mathematics and fiber arts" as used by Interlace includes:
Excluded are analyses that rely on thickness or intrinsic rigidity of the components, e.g. basketmaking or origami. Rigidity of finished objects should come from construction methods rather than from using rigid materials.
Articles may be made more useful to readership by inclusion of mentions of classroom use of ideas, but the meat of each article should be centered around mathematics rather than around pedagogy.
Authors who wish to treat topics adjacent to the scope of the journal may consult members of the editorial board about the potential suitability of their manuscripts.
