Guidelines for Authors

Interlace values clear exposition and helpful illustrations---both photos and diagrams. The interplay between mathematics and craft must be made explicit. We hope for each piece to include brief guides for the lay mathematician and lay crafter, but we also welcome manuscripts aimed at expert crafters or at professional mathematicians. We expect work that innovates mathematically, in terms of the fiber art, or in connecting mathematics to a specific fiber art. When feasible, manuscripts should include, or describe and link to, an example pattern.

Authors should expect that they will be asked to make revisions (and possibly substantial revisions) to already high-quality work in order to improve it further. Additionally, editors may make further changes to a manuscript once it has reached the final stages of publication. In exchange, the editors are willing to assist newcomers to the field in reaching our high standards. Still, authors should be aware that Interlace is run entirely by volunteer labor and there may be delays in responding to author queries. Submissions will be acknowledged when they are processed by the editors; please allow at least two weeks for an initial acknowledgement of a submission before writing to inquire.

Submissions of manuscripts must be in English. Any authors listed on a manuscript should have agreed to be listed as authors on the manuscript, and should have contributed substantially or materially to the content of the manuscript in order to merit named authorship. Each manuscript should include an abstract at the start. The bibliography should only list sources cited within the manuscript. In order to be published in Interlace, an accepted manuscript must be written in or converted to LaTeX; however, initial PDF submissions may be produced using any software.

Sources must be disclosed for each image included in a manuscript, and for those that are created by entities other than the authors, written permission from the copyright owner must be obtained prior to publication and a copy of this written permission filed with Interlace. (See the image permissions form and a sample image permission statement.) Any use charges are the responsibility of the authors. Excerpts of text or other material included in a manuscript similarly must be accompanied by written permission.

Authors may not use generative artificial intelligence or other artificial-intelligence-assisted technologies except to improve the writing quality of a submission (not to modify the content). If such technology is used in the preparation of a manuscript, authors must declare such assistance within the body of the manuscript and such a statement will be included in any published version of the manuscript.

In preparing a submission, anonymize the work by omitting author names from the manuscript (or replacing them with text such as "Author 1" and masking references to prior work by the author(s) (that is, don't say "in my prior work" but "in Yackel's prior work" for this purpose). We recommend commenting out the relevant names and references and preceding the comments with substituted text.

For general guidelines on mathematical writing, we recommend The Grammar According to West and the style guide of the Journal of Integer Sequences.
